You will be amazed, as I have been many times!
When I began personal training with Matt, I was impressed immediately. He is laid back, yet intense at the same time. Matt believed in me and what I could do more than I believed in myself…and because he had faith in me, I was willing to try exercises I would never have tried on my own and to use heavier weights than I ever would have attempted to lift without his suggestion.
Matt constantly watches form and looks for ways to improve/tweak what I am doing to make the exercise more efficient and beneficial to me. He is beyond knowledgeable. The slightest variation in form has made a huge difference for me over and over again…suggestions as simple as looking up with my gaze as I lift or pretending to rip apart a paper towel with my feet when I dead lift have enabled me to put up weight I didn’t think I could put up. I didn’t have much experience with weights beyond the standard machines in most gyms before I started with Matt. In a very short time, I became comfortable with using kettlebells and moved into Olympic lifts too.
Matt’s attention to form also helps me to feel that I will stay injury free during my workouts. There is a difference between pain when you are working out and soreness because you are working hard. Matt makes it very clear that if it hurts, don’t do it! But…don’t worry…he will either modify what you are doing or tap into his experience and training in pain management to get you through it. For example, I have a problem with my shoulder that pops up from time to time. Certain movements in my daily routine are very painful when it acts up. Matt has taught me how to use hip circles to fix my shoulder problem…yep…hip circles to fix the shoulder! The best part is that the relief is instantaneous if I do the hip circles correctly!
I also have a history of migraines, neck pain and limited mobility in my neck. I recently found out that I have arthritis in my neck, which makes working on maintaining and increasing mobility even more important. Matt has taught me how to use nerve glides and balance drills to alleviate pain and increase mobility. While my neck inevitably tightens up again (I carry all my stress in my neck and shoulders), I know that performing some more nerve glides and balance drills will help again. Just recently I had a migraine at a training session. I still worked out because I knew I could count on Matt to help with the pain, and he did. He was able to help me get rid of my headache with a simple massage around the eye socket that I performed myself. (And will use again the next time!)
In the event that you could use some help in regards to nutrition…look no further…Matt can do that too!
To anyone contemplating whether or not to work with Matt…stop thinking about it and jump in! You will NOT be sorry. You will learn something and benefit from every session, whether it’s a performance session or a pain management session. Be forewarned though, Matt may ask YOU to do something that doesn’t make sense to you (like hip circles to fix your shoulder), go with it. I have seen him work with multiple people over the years for both performance and pain management. His methods work…keep your mind open and let him help. You will be amazed, as I have been many times.
